Gareth Southgate announces England squad

Gareth Southgate as announced his 33-man group for the Euros this summer. The squad trim to 26 will happen when the tournament kicks off next month.

There have been some surprise inclusions like Brighton’ defender Ben White and Everton’s Ben Godfrey.

Southampton striker Danny Ings could count himself unlucky to miss the squad. Eric Dier is another casualty. The Spurs defender was an integral part of England’s semi-final success in 2018.

Borrusia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and West Ham’s Jessi Lingard also make the squad. Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood makes the squad while Aaron Wan Bissaka misses out

Many pundits had Liverpool Trent Alexander-Arnold down as another inclusion, but he has made the provisional squad due to good form.  Another Liverpool player to make the squad is Jordan Henderson in despite not playing for three months,

James Maddison has also missed out despite his stunning form for the FA Cup winners. This is not a surprise to many due previous problems. Gareth Southgate hadn’t called up Maddison before.

The Europa League and Champions League finals take place this week. 12 players will play which will not allow Southgate to choose his full squad yet.

The Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United players will report on Saturday for training ahead of the friendly against Austria on June 2.

Southgate has to whittle his final squad down to 26 to submit to Uefa on June 1 – but there is the chance to replace anyone who gets injured or falls ill up until 24 hours before their opening game against Croatia.

So there is every chance some will figure at least in the Austria warm-up game who already know they have not made the final cut for the tournament, being placed on the stand-by list in case of any late pull-outs.
