Edwards beats Mthalane to be crowned IBF World title

Sunny Edwards put in a masterclass performance on Friday night beating the number one Flyweight in the world Moruti Mthalane. The unanimous decision with the judges scoring the bout 118-111, 120-108, 115-113.

This puts Edwards on the line to face any contender in the Flyweight and Super-Flyweight division. He has also become the 149th Boxer to win a world title under Frank Warren.

Many people had their concerns on whether Edwards would win that fight. It was his first ever time stepping up on to the elite level. Mthalane competed in his 11th world title defense and has fought some of the toughest opponents throughout his long-lasting career. However, Edwards’ hand speed, judgement of distance, and footwork troubled the South African veteran and won almost every single round.

During the later rounds, it looked like Edwards didn’t have enough gas to finish the job. Mthalane had Sunny on the back foot and landing some clean shots which could have put him in real danger

It is evident that Sunny is an astute fighter with a lot skills and heart to beat anyone in his weight class. He is nowhere close to being the finished article yet though. At the ripe age of 25, he needs tweaks here and there to become a complete fighter. Apart from that, he proved that he belongs on the world stage, British fans will agree

Mick Conlan beats Ionut Baluta by Split Decision

Also on the bill was Michael Conlan who secured a majority decision against the Romanian Ionut Baluta who troubled Conlan in a couple of stages being an unorthodox, awkward and tough fighter.

Ultimately, even though the scoring of the fight was closer than expected, Conlan managed to breeze through his opponent dodging most of his shots and landing cleanly to win the rounds.

He is now edging closer to a world title looking to compete for an IBF eliminator against any of the top ten contenders such as Kid Galahad, James Dickens or Mark Magsayo just to grab hold of that prestigious belt everyone is striving for.
