Manchester City have been crowned Premier League Champions after Manchester United lost 2-1 to Leicester. This comes after City failed to secure the title against Chelsea at home. It has been a world class campaign for Guardiola’s men. The club are claiming their fifth Premier League title in its history. Now it wasn’t always certain at the beginning of the season, but towards the end it was never in doubt.

How did City do it?

The start of the season was actually quite a bumpy start for City. In the second game of the season they suffered a heavy home defeat against Leicester. The final score was 5-2. City’s results were not terrible, however, they were not great either. They consistently failed to get results against other big teams. Questions were raised about the defence capabilities of Guardiola’s side. But, that’s where Manchester City’s signing of the season came in. Ruben Dias was signed for Β£65 million. Dias proved to be just the signing that City needed in order to sure up their defence. The team’s fortunes with Dias leading the back line drastically changed. As a result of Dias’ partnership with John Stones, City began racking up clean sheets and putting in good defensive performances.

A key turning point in the season of the eventual champions, was the 3-1 victory against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side. In this game City showed a resurgence after some below par performances. In an attempt to revive his team, Pep Guardiola used Kevin De Bruyne as a false 9. From there on out, City were a formidable force.

They had big wins against Tottenham and Liverpool (3-0 and 4-1 respectively). This as all part of a 13-game win streak that City amassed in the mid part of the season. As well as excellent Premier League performances, City also made it to the Carabao cup final where they would eventually beat Tottenham.

Furthermore, City made it to the semi-final of the FA cup, where they were knocked out by Tuchel’s Chelsea side. And, made it to the finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Champions League Hopes

For the first time in his managerial career with Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has reached the Champions League final. This comes after beating a number of big clubs on the way. Firstly, they overcame Real Madrid amongst others in the group stage, before seeing off Dortmund and Paris Saint Germain on the way to the final. Consequently, the Manchester side will be facing Chelsea in the Champions League final which has now been relocated to Portugal following Coronavirus concerns. It is the teams first ever Champions League final appearance and they will be hoping to come home with the trophy.
