After Canelo’s short amateur career, Canelo decided to turn pro at 15 years of age in Mexico. In 8 years he managed to accumulate 42 wins by beating world class fighters such as Matthew Hatton, Shane Mosely and Austin Trout. He would become a unified light-middleweight champion from this.

He later on he got the opportunity to face Boxing superstar Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in one of the biggest PPV fights in history. Mayweather ultimately outclassed him in 12 rounds and receive his first professional loss in his career.

What happened after

Even though he was distraught about his defeat, Canelo learnt a lot from that bout. His style and with help from trainer Eddy Reynoso allowed him to become the biggest draw in Boxing today. He’s been apart of some biggest fights in modern history.

Since his loss to Mayweather in 2013, Canelo remains undefeated and became a 4 time-division champion facing the likes of Miguel Cotto, Sergey Kovalev, Gennady Golovkin, Danny Jacobs and Callum Smith. He became a stand out more than anyone else in his era.

However, he has had some questionable wins against slick southpaws such a Erislandy Lara or Austin Trout that could have gone either way, and out of all the styles out there in the division, Billy Joe could give Canelo the most problems.

Billy Joe has also been in the professional game for a very long time but hasn’t had the standout wins like Canelo. However, whenever he becomes an underdog in a fight, he steps up to the challenge and gives a masterclass performance against quality fighters such as Andy Lee and David Lemieux.

It is very clear that Canelo is the favourite to win the fight in May and then plans to challenge Caleb plant for the IBF to become undisputed, but it would be foolish to disregard Billy Joe and his skillset. He will have to be in the best shape of his life and exercise a perfect game plan to beat the Mexican superstar which in his eyes, is ver much possible.
