Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins linked with Liverpool

Aston Villa ‘s Ollie Watkins has been linked to Liverpool in a blockbuster summer move today.

Liverpool have drawn blanks in front of goal despite having Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota on the books. They Merseyside club have had 146 shots at Anfield in 2021 and have only scored 4 goals. Their record in the last 9 games is poor.

Two of those came against Aston Villa a fortnight ago, where Watkins himself got on the scoresheet.

Salah has scored the majority of the goals for Liverpool. The Egyptian has chipped in with 28 goals. Sadio Mane however has regressed ans struggled to emulate the heights he hit in the league winning season previous . The Senegalese forward has13 goals , Roberto Firmino has just six strikes this term. Diogo Jota has 12 goals from just 25 outings.

Ollie Watkins at Liverpool ?

Watkins made his move to the midlands for £28m after shining for Brentford with 26 goals in 49 games in his final season at the club. This year he has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Dean Smiths side this season. He also scored a hatrick in Aston Villa’s 7-2 drubbing of Liverpool back in October.

Watkins has built up an impressive partnership with Jack Grealish. His ability to drop into wide positions have resulted in an England cap. He scored in England’s 5-0 win over San Marino last month.

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes that Watkins could ease the burden on Salah and Mane.

“If you want to get the best out of Salah and Mane and Jota in the number 10 role you need a natural centre-forward.

“He [Watkins] would bring everything to the party when you look at how he plays. He runs behind, good on the ball, brings others into play, good pace.

Liverpool have also been linked to RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konaté despite murmurs from Germany that they wouldn’t be going ahead with the deal.
